Heine’s Museum contains specimens o f the Brown-hooded Kingfisher from KafTraria.
Besides the testimony above-given o f Mr. Ayi’es, Dr. Finsch has recorded i t {I.e.) from
Natal, and I have a specimen in my own collection from th e same locality. The furthest
n o rth e rn limit a t which the species seems to have been met with, is the River Limpopo,
where i t Avas found b y Mr. Ayres, b u t was scarce in this district.
The description, measurements and figure are taken from an ad u lt specimen given me
b y my friend Mr. L ay ard from the Cape Colony. The young bird described was purchased
by me o f Mr. F ra n k o f Amsterdam.
