Adult. Head black, narrowly banded-with, d a rk berylline b lu e ; ear-coverts obscurely,
cheeks profusely striped with b rig lite r b lu e ; a patch o f feathers along th e sides o f the neck
orange ; scapulars black, washed with d a rk h e ry llin e -b lu e ; wing-coverts black, banded
with b rig h t blue, each band having a b rig h te r streak o f blue down th e centre ; quills
brownish black, pale orange a t the base, ex tern ally washed with d a rk herylline-blue; entii-e
back rich silvery blue ; tail d a rk greenish blue above, black beneath ; a v e ry small spot in
front o f the eye pale orange ; th ro a t and abdomen white, th e la tte r tin g ed vrith orange ; a
broad band across the b rea st b rig h t lazuli blue ; b ill black ; feet red. Total len g th 8'0
inches, o f bill from fro n t I'O, from gape 2*4, wing 3*4, ta il 1’4, tarsu s 0'4, middle toe 0‘5.
Young. Head brown, obscurely b a rred o r ra th e r specked ndth dull b lu e ; cheeks b lackish
brown striped with b rig h t berylline blue ; a spot between the bill and the eye deep s ie n n a ;
a small tu ft o f feathers a t th e base o f the lower mandible pale sienna ; a large longitudinal
p atch o f feathers a t th e side o f th e neck, white strongly tin g ed w ith deep^sienna ; and in
consequence o f the shortness o f the crest feathers, these feathers on the side o f the neck
n e a rly meet beliind the neck and almost form a nuchal coRar ; scapulars broivu ; wing-
coverts brown spotted with b rig h t blue, n o t banded as in the a d u l t ; quills brownish black,
the secondaries narrowly edged with greenish blue ; entfre back sRvery blue, b u t n o t so
b rillian t as in the a d u lt; tail brownish black above, slightly glossed w ith green, d a rk brown
beneath ; th ro a t white, tinged with pale sienna ; r e s t o f the u nder surface o f tho body
chesnut, with no appearance o f a breast-band, b u t a small patch o f feathers on each side of
the upper p a rt o f th e b rea st brownish black slightly glossed with blue ; upper mandible
d a rk brown, lower one yellowish; feet red. Total len g th 6'5 inches, of b ill from front U6,
from gape 2-0, \rin g 3'1, tail U3, tarsu s 0'4, middle toe 0-5, Innd toe 0-2.
