seen a t lea st half-a-dozen examples o f th is undete rmined species in different collections in
th is co u n try , all^ from Batchian o r Gilolo, aud th ey all p resen t th e same characters. The
b lu e o f th e back is never so b rig h t as in Ceyx lepida, with which, however, i t corresponds in
size. _ In th e v e ry deep orange colour o f th e b reast i t agrees w ith Ceyx uropygialis, b u t tho
back IS n o t so b r ig h t as in th is la s t named species. I th in k th a t on th e arrival o f more
specimens I shall be able to characterize th e Batchian b ird as new, b u t as o ur knowledge o f
