Adult. E n tire head and neck albescent, p u re r on the sides and back o f the neck ; middle
o f th e back and scapulars deep black, the basal p a rt o f the la tte r white ; lower p a rt o f the
back, rump, and u pper tail-co v erts brillian t u ltramarine, with a slight fringe of cobalt here
and th ere ; tail u ltramarine above, black beneath, th e feathers edged with black on tbe
u pper surface ; wing-coverts brown, mixed w ith black ; quills dark brown, white at the
base, th e base o f th e o u ter web o f the primaries and nearly th e whole o u ter web o f the
secondaries b r ig h t ultramai’ine, tin g ed in some lig h ts Avith lilac : th ro a t and b reast pure
Avhite ; r e s t o f th e u nder surface o f th e body, w ith the under wing- aud tail-coverts, deej)
sienna ; bill and feet rich sealing-wax red. Total length, 9 ‘0 inches ; o f bill from front,

Young. Similar to the adult, b u t has th e belly d u ll red and a few markings on the
breast ; bEl brownish-red, becoming b rig h te r n e a r the base ; edge o f carpal jo in t sandy red ;
no lilac on the Aving; and the bases o f the scapulars, which are white in the adult, are
dusky-grey.
