There are four groups o f the genus Ceyx, as follows:— ! . T h e C. tridactyla group,
with red bills and lilac plumage. 2. C. lepida group, w ith red bills b u t blue plumage.
3. C. solitaria, with a black bill. 4. C. philippinensis, with a blackish u p p e r and orange
lower mandible. O f these four different forms, th e first g ioup is typical o f the In d ian
Eegion, scarcely reaching into th e Australian, where th e second group takes its place, the
th ird group, containing only one species, is almost confined to the P ap u an Islands, while
th e fom-th, represented by one species also, is confined to th e Philippines, where i t forms
the link between th e genera Ceyx and .
