pale horn-colour, blackish along th e top, imder m andible o ran g e ; feet yellow. Total length
9 inches, o f bill from front 1-9, from gape 2-3, Aving 4A, tail 2'2, tarsus OA, middle toe
0'75, hin d toe 0'3.
Young. E x a c tly similar to the adult, b u t has the wing-coverts and scapulars spotted
Avith ochre.

Mr. Cassin was th e first to propose the id en tity o f the Halcyon varia o f E yton with
Temminck’s Dacelo concreta, and I have since proA-ed the correctness o f this identification
for on Avritiug to Mr. Ey to n , th a t gentleman very kuiclly examined the type-specimen
and assured me th a t my surmises were correct.
N o th in g has been recorded o f its habits.
The description and figure o f the old bird a re taken from a Sumatran specimen in my
collection. The y oung b ird figured is in the British Museum.
