divides th e family into two genera, Alcedo and Dacelo. using th e generally accepted genera
in a subgeneric r an k only. T h e following points call for remark. Alcedo cyanostigma (p. 11)
is considered distinct from A . cristata (auct. nec Linn.), o f which it is the young. Alcedo
amauroptera is considered to be the same as A . leucocephala-, b u t it is a good species, as
Professor Schlegel now freely admits.
Alcedo p ic tu ra ta is a new species from South Afi-ica. I t is A . natalensis. Smith.
Alcedo lecontei is n o t th a t species, b u t A ruficeps, Hai-tl.
Dacelo tyro is considered to b e a stage o f plumage o f D. gaudichaudi, b u t is afterward
admitted to be distinct.
Dacelo grayi is a new species fr om New Hebrides. I t is th e Sauropatis ju lioe , Heine.
Dacelo sacra is n o t th e tru e I L sacra, b u t is Todirhamphtis tu tu s (Gm.).
Only four species o f Tanysiptera are recognized—th e single rema rk we have to make
b eing th a t, a lth o u g h T. sabrina is united to T. doris. Professor Schlegel had a t th a t time
n o t seen th e tru e T. sabrina, which is from Kaioa.
Dacelo rubra is Ceyx tridactyla (Pall.).
