Now, although so many different styles o f plumage are exhibited in th e above tabular diagram,
yet in form th e birds are nearly identical, and certainly b elong to one genus. The fii-st
section, with the head lilac, contains only one species, o f w hich, however, th ere are several
subspecies. Next we have th ree species whose predominant colour is chestnut, though the
tinge o f this colour differs in each o f the three, while th e white, which is confined to tlie
th ro a t in H. g ulans, extends on to the breast in H. smyrnensis, and over the whole under-
sm-face in H. badia. Only two species have th e head black ; and these are very distinct and
different from all other members o f the genus. Of a ll th e above-mentioned birds Halcyon
badia, which is a representative in AVestem Africa o f a thoroughly In d ian type o i Halcyon,
is the only Ethiopian species, the others being every one Asiatic. The presence in AVest
