Alcedo cabanisii, “ Linn.,” is a new species. I have followed ornithologists generally in
giving H e r r von Tschudi credit for th is species, as I can hardly suppose th a t the celebrated
German ornithologist afte r whom it is named was known to Linnæus ! I t is, o f course, a
lapsus calami, b u t it reads curiously.

A résumé o f th e family is given, th e genera being as follows -.— Dacelo, with 6 species ;
Tanysiptera, with 2 species ; Halcyon, with 48 species ; Ceyx, with 2 species ; Alcedo, with
19 species, six o f w hich a re considered doub tfu l; Alcyone, with 6 species; and Ceryle, with
15 species, one o f which is doubtful, and four vei-y doubtful. O f the eleven Kingfishers thus
enumerated as in'ecognizable by Mr. Gray, I have been able to make out four satisfactorily.
T h e plates, for which alone Mr. Mitchell is responsible, represent the young of Halcyon
lindsayi and Ispidina p icta . Figui-es o f the characters o f the various genera are also given.

the addenda to appendix, no. 1 (p. iii). In the fu rth er addenda to appendix, no. 3 (p. xxrii),
Mr. B lyth believes Alcedo grandis, Bl., to be the adult, and A. nigricans, Bl., to be the young
o i Alcedo euryzona o f Temminck. This view is correct as regards A . n igricans; b u t Mr. Blyth
has since altered his opinion as regards A . grandis.
