Adult. Head uniform b rillian t co b alt; cheeks, ear-coverts, aud th e whole o f the back
rich ultramarine ; lesser and least coverts b rillian t cobalt, the second series brio-ht
ultramarme, the cubital and prim ary coverts ultramarine, uniform w ith the back ; quills
e ntirely black, tbe o u ter web b roadly washed w ith deep u ltramarin e ; lower p a rt o f the back,
rump, and u pper tail-coverts pure wbite j tail-feath ers a ll p u re white, the middle ones with
no a tten u ated end and no perceptible spatula, these feathers Avhen observed from a distance
and placed on a level with the eye having a faint blue lu stre ; entire under surface white
th ig h s u ltramarin e, and the flanks long itu d in ally marked with th is colour a lso ; bill
v e rm ilio n ; feet olive-brown. Total len g th 13-5 inches, o f bill from fro n t 1*4, from’ o-apc
1-7, win g 4-5, tail 4-f), middle rectrices 8-0, tarsu s 0*5, middle toe 0-7, hin d toe 0-35.
An o th er specimen is precisely similar to th e foregoing, b u t has the middle tail-feathers
marked with blue for about a q u a rte r o f th e ir length.
Young. Similar to the adult, b u t has the wing-coverts somewhat edged with ochre,
and some o f th e quills dull rusty-broAvn ; th e upper tail-coverts are broadly edged Avith
blue and tin g ed Avith ochre, and the entire under-surface o f th e body is also tinged Avitli the
last named colour, the flanks being marked Avith broAvn ; th e tail also is entirely blue.
