Alcedo ruficeps is Halcyon cinnamomeus (lege cinnamomina).
Alcedo albicilla is supposed by Dr. P ucheran to be different from
Gould, b u t in my opinion is identical.

Callalcyon is a new genus, recognized as such for th e first time, although previously used
as a subgenus in the ‘ Conspectus.’
Cancrophaga is a new genus for the reception of the African Halcyones. The type is
II. badia, Ven-eaux. Halcyon cancrophaga (Lath.) is proposed to be called Cancrophaga
lathami. Unfortunately, however, Latham’s species cannot be identified.
Cyanalcyon is a new genus. Type G. pyrrhopygia (Gould).

History Society o f Emden, entitled “ Verzeichniss der von dem H e rrn Major iCreling zu
Padang im J . 1852 geschenkten Vögel,” &c. Among those mentioned by Kre liu g is a supposed
new species o f Kingfisher, which he calls Alcedo puella. Professor Reichenbach
identifies i t as Halcyon pileata. I have never seen th e original paper.

A complete handbook to the arifauna o f W estern Africa. Twenty-three species o f Kingfishers
are recorded as occurring in this region ; b u t this number must be reduced by seven,
viz. Halcyon cancrophaga (Lath.), Alcedo senegalensis, and Ceryle tricolor, which are indeterminable,
while Halcyon ru fiven tris=H. semicoerulea, Alcedo nitida is n o t W e st African,
b u t is A . natalensis, A . n a is= A . coeruleocephala, and Ceryle gigantea=C. maxima. Add as
distinct Halcyon erythrogastra (Temm.)' from th e Cape-Verde Islands, and the number of
West-African Kingfishers will be found to be seventeen.
