This species was discovered by Dr. Bernstein in Raou and th e only specimens known
a re in th e Leiden Museum. Professor Schlegel is inclined to refer th em to T. doris, b u t
a t the same time he marks the characters wherein th e b ird from Raou does n o t agree with
th a t from Morty Island. T . Emilioe is certainly allied to T. doris, b u t differs in the much
b rig h te r colour o f the head and small wing-coverts, in th e distinct cobalt lu stre on the
cheeks and u p p e r p a rt o f th e back and in th e v ery m uch na rrow er margins to th e tail-
feathers : the nails also are o f a pale flesh-colour, b u t I do n o t know i f this is a permanent
character. Professor Schlegel has figured both th is species and T. doris (s. n. T. sa h in a )
in his beautiful work on Malayan Kingfishers (Vog. Xed In d . Alced. pl. 14).
I have named this species after my Avife, who from th e first has taken g re a t in te rest
in th e p resen t work, and vdio, possessing a v e ry good acquaintance w ith ornithology, has
been no mean assistance in its preparation. ¡For th é o p p ortunity o f figuring th e type-
specimen I am indebted to my kind friend Professor Schlegel, who len t i t to me from the
Leiden Museum.
