Above sh ining green, forehead and wing-coverts spotted r i t h o c h re ; a spot on each
side o f th e head a t the base o f th e bill, extending backwards over the eye pale reddish ;
th e neck encircled with a band o f white feathers, tipped with re d d ish ; wing-feather.s
blackish, the secundaries having th e o u ter web edged with green spotted with ochre,
an d th e basal h a lf o f the in n er web pale red d ish ; u n d e r surface deep red, becoming
grad u ally paler on th e th ro a t and c h in ; abdomen and u nder tail-coverts p u re w h ite ; bill
black, the basal po rtio n o f th e lower mandible yellowish; feet red d ish ; eye dark brown.
T o tal len g th 5 inches, o f b ill from front 1, from gape 1.3, wing 2.2, ta il 1.6, tarsu s 0.2,
middle toe 0.4, hin d toe .2. The female differs from the male in h a rin g a broad pectoral
band composed o f green feathers edged with white.

The present is one o f th e oldest known species of Kingfishers, being figured as long
ago as 1758 b y E dwards. F o r such a small b ird it enjoys a v ery w ide geographical range
the h ig h est locality y e t recorded being S. Andres T u x tla , in the State of Vera Cruz,
where i t was collected by Boiicard.
