T he old au thors were so no tab ly inaccurate in the localities th ey assigned to the
various species of birds described by them, th a t we o u g h t n o t to be surprised when i t
becomes evident th a t the Stork-billed Kmgfisher stated by them to be from J a v a , appears
on apparently unquestionable grounds n o t to in h ab it th a t island, b u t to be found only iu
Borneo. This fact was first pointed o u t b y L o rd Walden (P.Z.S. 1866, p. 553) and my
own researches confirm his Lordship’s decision. So far as I can see th e Bornean Sto rk billed
Kmgfisher appears to be a distinct species, b u t a comparison o f the p late given by me
with the figure o f th e Martin-pecheur de Java g iven hy_ Bufibn in the “ Planches Enluminées”
will shew a t once th a t th e two bird s figured ai*e identical. The figure in th e present work is
