|W.N. W. March between short ranges of hills. Streams of
lava observed. Crossed five small rivers flowing into the
[ Luika river.
fW. N. W. Left the valley of the Luika and crossed the Mnoni
{ range, and, descending, entered the country of Uvinza.
(N. by W. Crossed seven feeders of the Luika river. Journey
principally over the Malonga Mamba plateau. Rolling
country—banks of each stream belted with woods, ferns,
spear-grass, orchidaceous plants, and vast tracts arecovered
I with the Amomum.
(N.W. Crossed three streams and a bit of plateau; descended
into the palmy basin of Uhombo. Parrots first
[ seen in this basin. Large short-legged goats.
N.W. Crossed seven feeders of the Lubangi river; left the
Lubangi valley, ascending the Mwana Mkanga range.
Riba Riba’s is on the summit, 4000 feet above the level
of the ocean. Style of architecture changes here from
the cone roof to the square gable roof, which continues
as far as the Atlantic Ocean. In the deep forests all
about here the “ Sokos,” gorillas, or chimpanzees, are
heard roaring night arid day.
(NW. Cross eight streams, feeders of the Elwelu river.
Passed by two settlements— first, Mwana Ndenda; the second,
Mwana Msange, thence to Mugambwa, the capital of
the distrfct ‘ orKa-Bambarre—chief, Mwana Ngoy, the son
of the late Mwana T&lSSu. This place is famous for having
been the resting-place of Dr. Livingstone for a long period.
(N. N.W. Crossed five feeders of Elwelu river; ascended Ka-
{ Bambarre range; marched along its crest, and descended
( its north-west'efh slope to Kalungu-lungu.
fN. W. Umene bears N.N. E. from here. Kanyengeri and
< Kitonga, N.N.E. Kasessa, N. by W. Kahanga, Kaibi,
V, Uzafu, Kalongola; are camps along a south-westerly route.
iWesterly. After 8 miles, crossed the Luama river to the
northern bank; width of river at crossing, 200 yards; depth,
6 feet. Elwelu river enters Luama river 4 miles above
ferry. Luama crossing, 2375 feet above sea.
