[Crossed Rugumba river. Ngoi is situate on the south bank.
I River 30 yards wide, 2 feet deep, a brown stream of con-
1 siderable current. Plain of Rugumba very wide and flat,
fertile, but thinly peopled.
[W. by N. Through thin forest of scrubby trees, country
rolling. Passed source of Lumba flowing into Lukuga
Creek. Camp is eastward of Kiyanja range. Game,
especially black buffalo^ abundant.
North-westerly. Crossed the Kiyanja ridge and source of
Kibamba river, which empties into Lukuga Creek.
Abundance of wild fruit in the forests. Mkassa river
flows -S. W. into Lukuga river, thence into the Lualaba
river. Kiyanja ridge is the water-parting between sources
of rivers flowing easterly and those flowing west.
N. by W. Camp near sources of the Luama river. Crossed
three streams and three hill-ridges. Forested country.
'N. by E. Crossed seven small streams flowing into headwaters
of Luama river. Vegetation undergone a remarkable
» change from that east of Lake Tanganika.
'N. by W. Crossed Rugumba river, which is the head river
[ of the Luama. Water abundant along route.
North-westerly. Crossed five streams, affluents of the Luama.

/ the Luama. Crossed three more streams.
North-westerly. Passed hot-water springs near Lambo. Natives
of this region are remarkably artistic in their head-dresses;
I turners and sculptors in wood. People amiable, food
abundant and cheap.
