The larger eyes are of a fine red-brown.
T l i e fro'ocis is orange colour. The frontlet
is of a greyifli brown. The thorax is of a
greyidi dirty brown having four dark ftripes
along the back part, hardly perceptible. The
fcululum is of an orange brown and gloffy.
T h e abdomen is of an orange colour, having
two dark lines acrofs and one down the middle,
dividing it into fix parts. The wings
are brownilli and clear. This fly is very remarkable
for the kngth of its probocis,
which, when drawn or exerted, tapers in a
bended form like a knee, as in the figure,
but when the animal is at reft, it is drawn
u p and fheathed in the trunk at the nofe
part, and appears as fhewn in the plate be •
l ow the figure, This fly feeds on the honey
of flowers, and the probocis formed
to do the ofiice of the tongue of the bee.
It is flefliy, and hath mufcular motion like
thofe of the reft of the mufca;. They may
be taken about banks and hedges, gently
flying, and fettling on the leaves and
flowers, from June to September. Sec

Méfurs quatre
'Lti grands yeux font d'un beau rouge brun.
L a trompe eft couleur d'orange. L.tfronteau
eft d'un brun grifatre. Le corcelet eft grifatre
d'un brun foncé, il a quatre raies foncées,
le long diii derrière prefque imperceptibles.
L e fcutulum eft couleur d'orange brun, &
luftre, Uabdomen eft couleur d'orange, avec
deux lignes obicures a travers, & une le
l o n g du milieu, le divifant en fix parties.
Les ailes font brunâtres. Cette mouche eft
très remarquable pour la longueur de Hi
trompe qui lorfqué exercée, paroit bandée
en forme de genou, comme dans la figure,
elle fe nourrit fur le miel des fleurs, & les
trompe eft formé pour faire l'office de la
langue de l'abeille. Elle eft charnue, & fe
meut mufculairement, comme les autres
mouches. On les trouve fur les hayes, de

Tilt frontlet is of a dirty buff colour, the
male, as ufual, hath none, the larger eyes
meeting together. The thorax is of an orange
brown covered with a pile like
v e l v e t . The abdomen hath one half which
joins to the thorax cream colour, and pellucid
or clear like the horn of a lanthorn, but
that part toward the anus black and glofly.
T h e wings are clear and tranfparent, having
a brown cloud-like fpot in the middle of each.
Legs are black. This is a male. They are
not very plentiTul, generally found vifiting
flowers by bank fides, which they approach
b y flow degrees. See Linn, Mus, 02.
L e fronteau eft d'un fond brun fale. Les
yeux du male ne fe joignent pas comme de
coutume. Le corcelet eft couleur d'orange
brun couvertde velour, en forme de pyramide.
Uabdomen a la moitié, qui eft proche du
corcelet, couleur de creme, où clair comme
la corne d'une lanterne, mais la partie proche
de l'anus, eft noire, & luftrée. Les ailes
font claires ont un nuage brun, comme une
tache au milieu de chacune. Les jambes
font noires. On les trouve généralement
vifitans les fleurs le long des eminences,
qu'elles aporochent lentement, Vovez Lin.

T h e two next or middle annuli of the abdomen
are of a fine orange brown. The anus
or end is black. The legs clouded black
and yellow. The wings are clear, white and
tranfparent.

bi-ight yellow. The wings are clear, and
without ¡pots. The legs and feet are yellow,
but the thighs black. They are found in
meadows on the flowers of the dentdelion,
in July.
'Lz eft couleur d'ofive noir fale foiblement luftre
Uabdomen eft noir & luftré. Uanus ou le
dernier anneau eft poileux & d'un jaune vif.
L e s ailes font claires, & fans tache. Les
jambes Sz pieds font jaunes, & les cuifles
noires. On les trouve dans les prairies fur
les fleurs de dendelion, vulgairement appelles
piflTenlit, en Juillet.

T h e nofe is of a greenifh yellow. The
thorax is black, having a neat yellow line
on each fide. The fcutulum is yellow. The
abdomen is black, having three broad yellow
bands lying acrofs it, the two outer ones
are divided by a firull black fine. The
anus is yellow, having a number of fmail
angular black fpots thereon it is very fcarce.
W h e n they fly they feem to ftand ftill in the
air, and, when they pleafe, can turn their
bodies with great nimblenefs, and dart off"
m fo fwift a manner that they appear to
vanifli, as the eye cannot difcern which way
they went.
L e jicz eft d'un jaune verdatre. Le corcelet
eft noir, a une jolie ligne jaune a chaque
cote, Le/ia/afe?« eft jaune. Uabdomen it'A.
noir, il a trois bandes jaunés au travers les
deux du de'horsfont divilées par une petite
l i g n e noire. Uanus eft jaune, a au deflks
nombre^ de petites taches noires angulaii-es,
il eft très rare, quand ils volent ils paro^ffent
être imbobiles dans l'air, & quanti il leur
plaît tournent le corps avec beaucoup d'agilite,
& s'en volenciû fubitement qu'ils parmfient
avoir difparu, mais reviennent auflitot
a la même place.
