sepals, lmcar-obli)njr, obtuse, Gxpanclecl at the base, glabrous, except one-half of the
outer surface which is adpressed-pubesccut. Slaiii'ms la, in 3 rows, the filaments of
all dilated, uaequal; the authers sliortly ovate, each with a short apical appcinlago
f r om tliG connective. Oi>ar// narrowly conical, tomentoso, tapering' into the short
glabrous style, stigma minute. liipo fnut narrowly ovoid, apiculatc, niiuutely
palc-tomentose, substriatc, r 2 in. long, and" '6 in. in duim., the pericarp thick and
woody. Persistent sepals with much thickened concave woody bases, forming a cup
embracing the lower half of the fruit, the apices of the outer three prolonged into
membranous liusar-obloug sub-obfcus3 wings, one of them exceeding the fruit and
sometimes l"5 in. long; one of the inuer sepals shortly winged, the other often
broad obtuse and not winged.
P e r a k ; common King's Collector.
I n this plant tte fruit is mucli larger tliiin is usual in the genus, and its pericnrp is bard onj thick.
The ba<es "f the sepals nre greatly tliickened and oonoave, aui they form a cup which embraces closely,
but does not. adhere to, the lower half of th3 fruit, the apioes of some of them being winged as above
describod. In thess respects the speciss resembles certain other Malaynu speoies of Shorca, o g., S. MaHiniuM
SclieC., S. scahervima, and S. steuoplera, Biurek. Judging from tlie leaf-specimens on which Miquel
founded his Hopea Singkawaiig, that plant must he r close ally of ihis. A specimea (flower only) collected
by II. 0. Forbes in Sumatra (Eerb. No. 2953) must nUo he closely allied to this. It differs however
by its conspicuously bracteolate inflorescence. Beccari's Nos, 2GS1 and 3-507, whick form the tj-pes of
iloira's species S. braelii/pUra, are also allied to this.
