26 ANNALS OF EOYAL BOTAKIC GABDEN, CALCUTTA.
t h e trunks of trees, rseudohulhs 3i iuclies long by 1 — 1^ inches diam., pale green, with
many loHgitudinal furrows. Scape inserted on the rhizome near tho base of a pseudol)iilb,
6 inches lon^-, striate, orecto-patent, clothed throughout with coriaceous sheaths, the lower
of which are very short and closely imbricatc, the upper laxer, an inch long, tubular
with obtuse mouths. Raceme 4 inches long, ascending, 6-fid.; rachis slender, siibfiesuous;
bracts rigid, one inch long, elongato-cymbiform, subacute, ratlier longer
than tho ovary; pedicel slender; flowers pure white except the five yellow crested
ridges on tho lip, which extend from the base to halfway down the terminal lobe.
Sepals 1 inch long and petals pure white, lateral lanceolate acuminuto, dorsal elliptic
acute; petals as long, oblanceolate, acute. Lip with obtuse short side-lobes and an orbicular
apiculate midlube. Column tmncate at the top.
Though in most cliaractors a memter of n. section of Enccelogynim wbieh flower from an undeveloped
pseudobulb, and of wliicb the scopes are clothed with imbricating sheaths, it would, if the
drawing is to be depended upon, differ fi'om all those known to me in the scape springing
dh'ectly from tho rhizome, and neither from the base or apes of an old or nascent pseudobulh. Be
this as it may, G. Kingn is a very different species from any Indian one known to me. Its nearest
aUies are C. Maingn>ii, Hook f., and the foUowiog {C. longibracleala).
The drawing here reproduced is inscribed "Perak, Künstler, fid. in H. B. 0., 21.5-86." Fig, 4
is draira from a dried lip, by Miss Smith at Kew.

Rhizome rather stout, probably erect or inclined against the trunks of trees. Fseudo-
Mbs ovoid, green, many-fm-rowed, l i - 2 m. long. Leaves 6 - 7 by l - l j in., pale-green,
3-nerved; petiole 1 in. Scape 6 in., striate, suberect, clothed for the greater part with
green sheaths, of which the lower few are short and looser, the rest very long and
tubular- a pair of erect young leaves, longer than the raceme, protrude wilh tho latter
f r om the uppermost sheath; raceme 3 in., erect, strict, 3-5-fld.; bracts very long,
slender, striate, concave, at length deflexed; pedicel with ovary 1 in., decurved; flowers
deflexed, wlüte, fragrant. Sepals lanceolate, acuminate; petals oblanceolate, acute; lip
with the midlobe as long as the liypochil, nearly orbicular, its margins crisped towards
t h e base; lobes of hypochil rounded; disk with five golden-crested ridges running from
the base lo the middle of the midlobe.
A CENTURY OP INDIAN OECHIDS ; (J. D. HOOKER). 27
A species retoarkable for the great length ef the bracts, which far exceed those of any other
Indian species known to me. It belongs to the same section as C. Maingayi and C. Eimjii, but
differs fi'om both in the two long leaves the petioles of which are embraced ia the same sheaths as
the scape. In the Flora of British India the psoudobulba are by error described as obovoid
instead of ovoid.
The drawing is inscribed "Künstler, Perak, ia H-B.C., introd. 4-5-83, fld. 1-9-83, G. King."

HAT?.—KIIASIA HILLS. Sikkim, at llungpo, alt. 1,500 ft., Clarke. ASS.LM (/<?. in.
Rorh. nort., Calcutta).
Rhizome as stout as a goose-quill, creeping, clothed with closely imbricating appressed
ovate acute distichous brown scales 1 in. long. Pseudohulbs 2—3 in. long, usually
narrowly ovoid, with a few very slender ribs. Scape ascending, densely clothed with
distichous sheatlis, the lower of which resenible those of tho rhizome, but ai-e green, the
upper gradually longer and more lax, the uppermost foliaceous closely embracing the
young emerging leaves; raceme 4—0 in., inclined or drooping, many-fld.; bracts
distichous, coriaceous, striate, cymbiform, as long as the racliis, articulate ; pedicol with "
ovary ^ in., curved sigmoidly ; flowers white, i—§ in. long, very fragrant. Sepals and
petals erect, concave, subequal, pure white. Lip as long as the sepals, white with golden
ridges on the disk. Column short for the genus.
An interesting species, as showing a strong affinity with FhoUdota in habit, in the closed distichous
flowers and sub-articulate rachis of the riioemo, and in the column beiag shorter than in the
typical Ccologynes; but the large flowere, and form of the lip, which is not saccate, and the far longer
column than that of any Pholidota, and which is neither hooded nor winged, efiectually exclude it
from the latter genus.
The dra%viiig is marked "Assam, 30-4-80, Q. King."
