Ekizome creeping, fleshy. Stem 3—3 in., sheatbed. Leaves 3—5 in. long, many-uerred,
briglit green above, strongly ribbed, and often discoloiired -wholly or on tbe nerves only
beneath. Scnpe 3-8 in. high, slender. Raceme 2-4 iu. long, narrow; bracts ovate, acute,
green; flowers ^ in., ueai-ly ^ inch from the tip of the lip to that of the dorsal sepal,
greenish, purplish or yellowisk Sepals oblong, dorsal 1-3-uerved, lateral 3-5-nerved. Petals
3-nerved. Lip very variable as to the comparative and absolute length and breadth of the
lamina and auricles.
The plate represents a very small-flowered state of the Bpeoies. Mcroiii/Iis Wnl'icJiii is a vnry
common and variable Ilimalayan and Khasiau plaot; and probably, as liitherto defined, includes more
than one species, To illustrate the great differences in form of lip that occur in plants of M. Wallic/iii or
closely allied species not hitherto distinguished fi-om it, I have added to the plato enlarged figures of the
following:—
A. Flower of a Kliasian specimen, with sessile leares cordate at tiie base; Al, dorsal, A2, lateral sepal;
A3, petal,—sj>read out.
B. Floorer of another Kliasian specimeQ with narrower, locRer-petioled leaTcs; the lip nearly rouDdcd at
the apes; auricles long, parallel, acute,
C. Lip and dorsal sepal from the type of M. Wallic/iU. Liadl, ia Herb. Ee«^ (Wall. Ccit. n. 1938-1). Tlio
sepals aro very broad and the lip contracted opposite the coliima aud S-lobulate at the apes ; the
auricles divergent.
D. Flower fcom a large form cultirated at Kew, named M. hiloba, Reichh. f. The leaves are 6—7 by
S-2i m,-, scape with raceme 13—U in.; bracts i in, long, reilesed ; lip 2-lobulate at the apes;
auricles parallel.
E. Flower of specimen from the Andaman Islands (Kurz) with the apes of the lip acute and auricles crossing.
Leaves all broadly ovate, 3—1 by 2—i n . The lip appears not to be concave in front of
the column. It is probably a distinct apecias.
F. Flower of vat. omphaloides (11. obliqua, Parish Mts.) from Moulmeia, Lip S-lobxdate at the apex;
auricles short, rounded, oyerlapping. Mr. Parish observes of this, "very near iodeed to M.
omphaloides, but the flowers are fewer (8—10), 8"mewhat longer, lip neatly a pcrfect oval, with the
lobes overlapping and tip notched; the column Z-dentate (not 4.dentate as in omphaloidesy Fl,
fi'ont view of column with anther; F2, back view of column with anther remoTed ; F3, anther—a/i
from a drawing b¡/ Mr. Parish.
G. Flower of var. Irachychñla, from Moulmein, labelled M. liloba by Parish ; the leaves ate petioled,
lanceolate.
The drawing which is reproduced in Plate 2 was inscribed " Sitkim, 4,000 feet, July U, 187i, G. King."
The finares 1 and 2 at the left-hand upper corner and the analyses at the left-hand lower corner aro those of the
fpecimcn represented : 1, front and 2. back view of flower ; 3, lip ; i. dorsal sepal ; 5 aud G, lateral sepals ; 7 and 8.
petals ; 9, column—enlarged.

Pseudohulhs clustered, the size of a small hazelnut, green, smooth. Stem 0. leaf
4 - 0 ill., obtuse, acute or suddenly narrowed into an obtuse tip, with about 12 plaits,
pale green, narrowed at the base ; petiole 0—2 in. Scape enfolded by the base of the leaf,
rather stout, shorter than the leaf, man}'- and lax-flowered ; rachis of raceme (in the drawingj
rather thickened, reddish, ribbed ; bracts erect, spreading, green ; pedicel with ovary ^ in.,
slender. Sepals in., pale pink, margins recurved. Lip rather longer than the sepals,
greenish-yellow, with three strong, red median nerves, margins, and branching lateral nerves.
Column strongly incurved above the middle, terminal wings entii-e or more or less notched.
I n the specimens of this species described in the Flora of British India, the leaves
were sessile, whereas in this they have rather long petioles.

Pmcdohilhs 2—3 in. long by 1 — i n . broad, smooth, green, much compressed ; sheaths
membranous, acuto. Floiveriny scape from the base of tbe old pseudobulb, 2—3 in. b y \—1 in.
broad, flattened, clothed with compressed green imbricating acute sheaths. Leaves 6 10
b y 1—2 in., keeled, sessile or narrowed into a petiole, 5—7-nerved. Scape with the raceme
about as long as the leaves, stríct or flexuous ; b ract s^—f in. , concave; flowers 1 in. broad,
green. Lip with 3 median nerves and branching lateral ones.
Lindley gives Bhutan as the habitat for this species, and in all probability it is a
native of that country ; but the specimen ho described, and which is preserved in his
Herbarium now at Kcw, is tickcted from the Bralimakoond.
The drawing here reproduced is inscribed " Sikkim, 6-3-83, fld. in H. B. C., 19-7-83, G. King." The following
figures are of the specimen drawn :—l, bract and bud; 2, side and 3, front view o£ flower ; 6, l i p , — 0 / the
natural si:e ; 4, flower with tho lateral seimls and lip removed; 6, anther—ioM enlarged. The figures under A
aro from analyses of my own of a plant that flowered in the Knyal Garden, Kew, in Jone 1866, and is the typo of
Keiclienljach's L. setliyeni ; A, lip ; Al, dorsal and A2, lateral sepals ; A3, ijetal ; A4, column—ai/ enlarged.
