Sim rather slender. Leaves not crowded, 4—8 by 1 — i n . , pale gi-een, keeled beneath,
contracted at the base almost into a petiole. Scape 1 in., rather stout, green ; bracts
minute, broad, persistent; pedicels with ovarj in.; flowers -J in. diam. Sepals
and petals faintly tinged with pink. Lip not half the length of the sepals, inserted by a
narrow base to the base of the column, very much compressed laterally, nearly as deep
a s long, hollow, with a nai-row slit along the top, produced into a rounded boss or spur
below the solid obtuse tip. Column, with the cliuandrinm almost dorsal, and the
rostellum {at length 2-fid.) hence suberect. Anther depressed, beaked; pollinia globose,
strap narrow, gland not large.
A Tery well marked species 'both in halit, leaf, and flowers. Described from the drawing and detached
fiowers aceompanying it. It was made fiom a specimen sent hy Kunstler to the Calcutta Botanic
Garden, whicli flowered there, 7th October 18Si.

Stern 3—5 in., as thick as the little finger, clothed with the short, compressed pale
<rreen fleshy leaf-sheaths, and rooting. Leaves 4-10 by 1 ^ - 8 in., keeled, rigid, pale
green broadly sessile on the sheaths, narrowed to the acute terminal lobes. Scapes from
t h e lower part of the stem below the leaves, from the old but stdl green lower sheaths.
3—7 in. long, rather thickened in the rachis, green with scattered short, green, ovate-acute
bracts; pedicel with ovary in. Sepals 1 in., concave; petals . near ly as long or

shorter flat. Lip | as long as the sepals, with the claw nearly as long as the body,
and about as long as the side arms, margined with red, perforated as it were from the
insertion of the claw to the globose sac or spur, above which is the short caruncled
Diidlobe or epichil. Column short, rostellum very short, acute; anther very shortly
" ,d; pollinia globose; strap subspathulate, gland narrow.
There are several drawings of this beautiful species in the Calcutta collection, made from s;
that had flowered in the Eoyal Garden. But none are satisfactory as to the analysis of the lip
especiaUy. I have seen no specimens except some detached flowers in a pocket attached to the drawing
here reproduced; as to which it is difficult to wholly reconcile their lips with those in tho drawing, though
I think tlae latter are in the main accurate. The fact is that the distortion oi the lip when dried is so
great that I think it better to withhold any further attempt at comparing it with that of the drawing
further than to observe that in Fig. 2 the circular markings at the top of the claw represent oonmcles,
and tho terminal globose hody, the spua-, over which rises the epichil. The drawing is made from
a plant that flowered in the Calcutta Garden in May 1888.

Stem about an inch long, as tliick as the little finger. Leaves 6—12 by 1 |—2 in., recurved
or pendulous, pale green, flat, keeled. Peduncles 1—2 in., flexuous, nearly naked, gradually
thickened upward to the obtuse tip; bracts ovate, acute; pedicel with ovary ^ inch;
flowers inch diam., not quite white, rather cream-coloured, perianth spreading, but not
widely, tho segments narrow, very finely acuminate. Lip about shorter than the sepals,
slightly incm-ved; claws spotted with purple, as is the spur (or midlobe of the epichil);
lobes of the hypochil pale purple. Column rather short, rostellimi hardly beaked; anther
acute in front; pollinia globose.
Described from the drawing, for I have seen no specimens, It is evidently closely allied to S. aureus
but is a much less rohust plant, with less rigid leaves, much shorter clavellate peduncles, narrower
nearly white sepals and petals, with very finely acuminate tips. The structure of the hp is the same, but
iu this the epichil is developed mto two erect lobes. The drawing bears the inscription "Malaya

days. G. King."
