Vatica, Linn.
Large or moderately sized resinous trees. Leaves coriaceous, entire, feather-veined
and finely reticulate; stipules small, fugacious or inconspicuous. Flowers in axillary and
terminal panicles, usually tomentose before expansion. Calyx-tiiU short, free, or adaate
t o the base of the ovary; segments somewhat acute, imbricate, then sub-valvate. Stamens
15; anthers oblong, external valves larger, connective apiculate, Ovar;/ 3-celled; style
short, subulate, or apex clavate or capitate; stigma entire or S-toothed ; ovules 2 in each
cell. Fruit leathery, iudehiscent, l-seeded, surrounded by and sometimes partly adnato
to the accrescent, membranous, nerved and reticulato calyx-lobes, two of wfaicli expand
i n t o narrow wings 2 or 3 iu. long, the other three being much smaller. CoUjlcdons
fleshy.

A tree GO to 80 feet high ; young branches slender, deciduously scui-fily stellatepubescent,
tbe bai-k rather pale. Leaves thinly coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate, or oblanceolatc,
more or less bluntly acuminate, sometimes caudate, the base euneate; both
surfaces glabrous, the midrib on the upper puberulous; main nerves 8 to 12'pai'-s
r a t h e r prominent beneath; length 3 to 4 in., breadth -8 to 1-3 in., petiole -4'to
•5 in. Panicles axillary and extra-axillary, cymose, crowded near the ends of the
branches, 1 to 2 in. long, minutely pale tomentoso as arc the ovate-lanceolate
calyx-lobes. Flotocrs --i in. long. Petals narrowly oblong, obtuso, glabrous. Stavzeni 15
anthers ovate and slightly apiculate. Ovari/ minutely tomentose ; stigma conical. Jiip'e
fruit -3 in. in diam., globose; the style persistent, minutely tomentose, quite free from
t h e calyx; the two accrescent calyx-lobcs oblong-oblanceolate, obtuse, obscurely 5-nerved
2-75 in. long and 75 iu. broad; minor lobes unequal, lanceolate-acuminate the
largest about -So in. long. '

The nearest ally of thia is Yaiica BxniamemU, Benth. and Hook. ; but that has ratlier larger and
moro coriaceous leaves which are perfeetly glabrous; larger flowers witli petals scaly esternally and
a more scurfy inaoresceuce ; moreover, the whole of the accrescent calys-lobea of its fruit are m
coriaceous and the minor lobes are blunter.
