Stem erect (40—) TO—150 cm. high, hrunched, besot with stiff retrorse fiaixa
especially upwards ; leaves very palo below, reniform or suborbicular, cordate, more or less
deeply tripartite, lateral segments trapezoidal unequally bibbed, all divisions very coarsely
serrate; inflorescence a very lax large subraceniose panicle; peduncles subereet, lower
ones up to 10 cm. long; bracteolcs nearly always alternate, inserted at varying heightsflowers
fetid; sepals doep-blue or purple; sopaline spur subulate, 1—ô mm, longer than
the lamina; anterior staminodes much shorter than the sepals, very dark-blue, ovate bifid
or Bubbilobed, yellow-beai'ded ; ovaries densely hairy; follicles 3, cylindric, 13 20 mm
long ; seeds obpyramidate, subtriangukr in cross-section, conspicuously wiuged along the
udges, puckered on the sides, epidermal cells veiy large aud irregular.
Flowers in September and October.
Distribution: Khasia; Shan Hills.
From the truo D. altisiimum of WuUich ths present speoiea diSera by ¡(a infloresnsnoo, which
in D. aUissimum is much more disticctly raoemosa; by the bluish-blaok (not light-purple) anierior staminodes,
ita ieüd flowers, and espscially by its seeds (compare plate 121, figs. 10 a, b, c, d with figs,

A perennial, middle-sized herb. Rhizome descending, subcylindric, 3—5 mm. thick.
Stem erect, strict, simple or scarcely branched, subcylindric, striated, fistulöse, 30
5 0 cm. high, 6—10 mm. thick near the base, glabrcscent below, upwards beset wjth
white partly crisp retrorse haii's partly villose with longer spreading hairs often mixed with
yellow glandular hairs. Lower leaves very long-petiolcd ; petioles gradually dilated near
the base, 5—18 cm. long, somewhat hairy; lamina reaiform, at the base cordate, 3-partite
to I, 3-Ö—6 cm. long, 6—10 cm. broad, beueath paler, puberulous or eubvillous; middle
segment cuneate-obovate, trifid upwards, lateral segments trapezoidal, 3—4-lobed; lobules
serrate-Gi-enate, serratures callose-apiculate; upper leaves gradually decreasing in size and
simpler with woolly petioles; lower floral leaves shortly petioled, subtruneate at the
base or with a wide triangular sinus, palmately tripartite, divisions seiTately incised and
crenate-serrate; intermediate floral leaves petiolate or sessile, cuneate, 3- or 2-fid, dorsally
woolly near the base, lacioias quite entire or sparsely serrate ; uppermost leaves lanceolate or
lanceolate-hnear, attenuated towards the base; narrowed upwards, 1 -5-2- 5 em. long, sometimes
glandulose. Inflorescence racemose, veiy dense. Peduncles erect, strict, terete or
sub-angulax, lanate, lower -i—o, uppermost l-o—2 cm. long, 1—2 mm. thick, bibracteolate
at the middle or near the top. IBracteoles opposite, sessile, adpressed, linear, narrowed
upwards, callose-apiculate, 10—15 mm. long, 2—4 mm. wide near base, hairy on the
back, ciliate. Sepals patulous, outside greyish-blue with blue nerves or entirely sky-blue,
c'.ncave, short-acuminate, sublanate outside, cihate, inside hairy along the nerres; lamina
of posterior sepal 2—2 o cm. long, broad-elliptic; spur either subsaccate, obtuse, about
6 mm. long, 3—i mm. thick near base, or conical, subacute, 12—15 mm. long; lateral
sepals suborbicnkr, 16—20 mm. Jong. Lamina of nectariferous staminodes asymmetrically
spatolate, at the apex bilobed or e:uarginat2, 12—15 mm. long, below 1-5-2 mm.

at the tip yellow-bearded; spur slender-conicai, acute, subincurved, inside opea to about
one-third and here glabrous or minntely haiiy. Petaloid staminodes "vvith an ovate or
oborate bifid lamina, which is 6—7 mm. long, on the upper surface rather densely hairy,
near the base somewhat bearded with yellow or white hairs, ciliate, dorsally hairy; lobes
divei^ent ovate-oblong, subacute (sometimes the lamina is bilobed and erose or unequally
trifid); claw linear, at least as long as the lamina, dorsally somewhat hairy. Stamens
moderately numer.ios, 5—9 mm. long, innermost by about 1 mm. shorter, glabrousfilaments
dilated towards the base; anthers ellipsoidal, obscurely apioulate, about 0-8
mm. long. PistUs 3, erect, 4—5 mn..; ovaries ovoid-oblong, reticulate, 3 mm. loner
glabrons, or glabrous dorsally, ventrally minute-pubescent, or densely pubescent all overstyle
filiform. Ovules about 20. Follicles 3, membranceous, erect, cylindric, obliquely
subtnmcata at the rounded tip, 11 — 12 mm. long, white-villose, style 3- mm. Seeds
cibpyramidal, about 2 mm. long, brown, winged ^v-ich the loose testa.
