below, then ascending, as thick as a swan's quill or less, clothed below with white
inemhranous truncate pubescent sheaths, leafy above. Leaves 2—3 in., ovate-lanceolate
or elliptic, acuminate, narrowed into a short petiole, membranous, bright green, paler
beneath ; sheaths appressed to the stem, lower upper in., striate, pale green.
Raceme or spike terminal, sessile, many-fid. ; bracts longer than the ovary, very large,
broadly ovate, obtuse, membranous, pale brown, striate ; pedicels short, with the
pubescent ovary \—f in. long, suberect; flowers ^—§ iu. long, white or pale pink, or
white tipped with red. ¡Sepals puberulous, subequal, ovatc-oblongj acute, free, dorsal
forming a hood with the shorter, broader, obtuse petals. Lip shorter than the petals,
adnate to the sides of the column, subpanduriform, reflexed from the middle, strongly
5-iierved, disk with two flattish calli aboxit the middle and a thick lamella extending
to the rounded tip ; spur longer than the blade, straight, inflated above, slender
below, striate, longitudinally grooved and infolded at the back, tip rounded and notched.
Column short, white, contracted below the broad pulvinate contral stigma, without
appendages in front ; rostellum short, erect at length bifid. Anther sessile, erect,
linear-oblong, 2-cellcd; pollinia narrow, tipped with hard lanceolate appendages, pollengrains
