Stem as thick as tlic little finger, somewhat CDmpressed, green, rooting below the
leaves. Leaves 3—6 by f—1 in., bright green, smooth, deeply channelled, sides convex.
Scape 6—10 in., as thick as a swan's quill, green; sheaths ^ in. long, T\'hite; panicle 18
in. long, stiff, branches distant, spreading, 6—'10 ft. long; bracts at the bases of the
branches -5 in., of the flower ^ in. ; pedicels with ovaiy | in. Lateral sepals and petals
widely spreading, subfalcate. Horns of colmnn suberect, cylindric, slightly decurved.
Anther subquadrate, retuse, crested "with hair, contracted at the sides.
A s I baTG stated in the Flora of Dritisli India in the notes under TrichogloUis, I tliink that
B e n t l i am erred in suppressing this genus in the Genera Piantarum, and that taking Elume's T. retma
( B i j d i ' . 360, Tabellen. fig. TÌÌÌ) as the type, it is well distinguished b y the long narrow processes at t h e
base of the lip and its haiiiness, which suggested the generio name. Kuta's T. qundricomula from
t h e Nicohar Isda., judging from his figure and description, gencrically -well accords with T. retuaa and
T. Datisoniana, as does T. facciata, of Manilla, of wiiich there is a fine drawing in t h e Calcut t a Ilerbarium.
T h e polhnia of T. Dawsoniana ai'O large, globose, with short slender straps ; not as represented at
fig. 5, which is probably imperfect or undeveloped. I also find the sepals and petals in the dried
specimens to have each a cusp beneath the apex, a feature not represented in the drawing, which
is inscribed "Renanthera from Moulmem, 12-5-70," (the d a t e no doubt of its flowering in the Calcutta

Stem 6—10 in. long, flexuous, as thick as a goose-quill, pale greenish, studded with
small warts, as on the peduncle and rachis of the raceme and bracts. Leaves 3—i by i—f
in., recmvcd, dark green, terminal lobes unequal, sides convex. Peduncle 6—8 in., striate,
rigid, bright green, as thick as a crow-quill; sheaths ovate, obtuse; raceme 4—8-ild.;
bracts g—5 in., green; pedicels with ovary 1—i n . , ascending, nearly white. Flowers 14-
in. diam.; sepals and petals spreading and more or less recurved, lateral sepals witli tlieir
tips often crossing under the lip, which is only half their length and nearly straight.
Column Ycxj short; anther depressed, 2.1obed, red; pollinia nearly globose or ellipsoid,
strap moderate inflesed; gland large, transverse.
I have followed Bentham in placing this in Stauropsis, though it bears little resemblanco to its
g i g a n t i c , golden flowered congener, S. gigantms. From Fanda it differs h i the base of the l i p being
a d n a t e to the sides of the column, but it resembles in habit V. ccerukscim. From Phalacnoima it
differs in the l i p being adnate to the sides of the column, and i n wanting a forked appendage on
t h e disk of the lip, Lastly, should the l i p prove, to b e jointed at the base and mobile which I cannot
detenninQ on the dried specimens, it may .bettor be plooei in Artickmn'M. Tbe warted stems,
scapes, &c., a r e cliaracteristio of tiiis species alone amongst fbe allied Vandm known to me.
I t will be observed tbat there is great disKrepaney in the aeeompanying plate between the form
of the lip as represented of the natura l siae and the enlarged figures 1 and 2 ; the latter-are more
l i k e what I find in the dried specimens. The colouring of the flowers, top, m a y admi t of correction
