A . very variable plant in size, ttougli I hare seen BO specimen approachiDg in this respect that
here figured, the drawing of which is inscribed "Sikkim, 4—6,000 ft. October 1876. G. K " But for
tlie greater size, tliia is hardly if at all distinguishable from C. fimbria'a, Lindl,—a Kbasia species also
found in China, of which the rhizome is no thicker than a duck's quill, and the pseudobulbs J—li ¡n.
long and ovoid-oblong. Indeed unless better characters are found on a comparison of lÍTÍDg specimens
to distinguish these two plants, I think tliey must be united under the name of C. fmóridía, Lindl., in
Wall. Cat. n. 1957. Both species were established by Lindley and described oontomporaneously in 1838,
C. fmhnata at Tab. 868 of the Botiinical Register, and C. ovalis in the Miscellanea of the same year
and volume. C. fuliginosa, Lindl., of Tenasserim (Bot. Mag. 4440), is another far too closely allied
plant.

Leaves 3—6 in., bright green; petiole slender, 1 — i n . Scape 6—10 in., slender, green,
naked up to about one inch below the racemc, where it is clothed with small distichous
closely imbricating convcx glumaceous light-brown scale-like sheaths about J in. long ;
racemc 1—i n . , erect, rather close-fld.; bracts sub-distichous, narrowly oblong, concave,
about ^ in. long or less, deciduous ; pedicel with ovary -J in. ; flowers | in. diam.,
uniformly pale yellow. Sepals oblong, acute ; petals narrowly linear; lip with small
side lobes and a large obcordate midlobe, disk with 2 faint ridges. Capsule -| in.
long, ellipsoid. •
C. flavida belongs to a group of nine Indian species of the genus, with terminal scapes that
bear distichous imbricating scales immediately below tl3e raceme, which is otherwise naked. It would
be interesting to discover the objcct of this singular arrangement. The said scales may be regarded
as greatly reduced empty floral bracts i:ke the small Sowerless glumes beneath the principnl flowerless
ones in some gi-aases, but this is no explanation. A very cmious modification of the scape is represented
at fig. B'., which is token from a specimen in the Wallichian Herbarium, marked in "Wallich's
handwriting as received ftom Mr. Hamilton in Nepal. It presents a scape terminated by an elongate
raohis which hears three superposed series of .distichous persistant imbricating flowerless bracts, separated
by flowering intervals when the raohis is zigzag, and naked from the flowering bracts having fallen
away. The third or uppermost series of flowei-less bracts is succeeded by a continuation of the raehis with
its flowering bracts and "flowers. Of the three naked intervals, the lowest has neither flower nor fruit,
the second bears frmt, the third or terminal is flowering. This aarangement indicates tbreo successive
superposed inflorescenc€8 on the same scape, probably occupying as many years for tlieir devoiop.
ment. I know of no parallel to this in the genus, though such may very well occur. The drawing
here reproduced is of a Khasia specimen and is inscribed "C. flavida, Wall. Mr. Gibson, Cherra."
