§ 10 in. diani., dark green, with about 20 principal folds, and many
interposed nerves, bright green above ; petiole 12 in., acutely ribbed, green
above, red-purple below the middle. Scape about as long as the petiole, darli-brown
below and as thick as a goose-quill, more slender, green, and acutely ribbed above;
sheaths few, 1—1^ in^j cymbiform; raceme strict, 4—6 in. long, rachis angled; bracts
1—1 in., green, veiy slender; pedicels with ovary ^ in., decurved; liowers f in. long,
horizontal. Sepals and petals connivent. Column dor sally hairy at the tip.
A noble species, much the largest hitherto known, discovered, I believe, by Mr. Scott uear Ohittagoug
when Ciu'ator of the Calcutta Botonio Garden, and after whom Reichenbaeh named it. I do not know on
what authority the latter author gives Sikkim as its native country, though it is a very Ukely one.
Lindley refers the Burmese plant of Griffith to P. e<m,iaia, but the saccate base of the Up and flowers
placed at an angle with the ovary rather indicate P. SsoUii. Theh- characters are, however, not shown in
GriiBth's figiire.
The drawing here reproduced is iascrlbeJ "PogDuLa nohilis, S:otl. Po^'oaia o£ Soetakoond hill,

Tule)- globose, the size of a marble, annulate. Leaf —2^ in. dlam., dark green,
not waved, but plicate; petiole 2—4 in., striate, passing below into a long, erect
rhizome, with horizontal roots and suckers; at the junction of the petiole and rhizome is
a lanceolate sheath. Scape 8—12 in., slender, terete, with appressed tubular basal sheaths;
raceme many or few-fld. ; bracts 4—f in. long, spreading, green ; pedicels about
A in.; ovary longer, turbinate; sepals « in.-- long,' and . rather ..
narrowed ;
greenish; lip pink.
I am pretty certain that this is Lindley's P. carinata. On the drawing it is named "P. plicaia,
Lindl. fid, in. H. B. C. in pots, April 1861, T. Anders.," which it certainly is not, that species being only
1—3-fld., and having hairy leaves and small bracts. The column is, however, similarly deeply 2-lobed
at the tip, and the long siurculi proceeding from the downward prolongation from the base of the petiole
are no doubt of the same natui'e as the tuheriforous ones of P. plicata. The Indian Pogonias ai'e very
imperfectly known, and being of an extremely delicate consistence, it is only from very carefully preserved
specimens or di'awings that characters of any value can bo drawn.
