Aa o.amLnatioa of the numerous specimens of D. smiouloef.diun, in tlie herbaria of CaIout!a and
Sahamnpur shows of bow httle importance variations in tbe form of tha apura of the posterior sepal and
of the nectaries are m the group of forms of wMoh I), k'jbridum may be talcon as the type
TMs holds good especiaUy with regard to the gibbosity of the sepaUne spur, which is duo to an
excess of growth of tho nectarial spurs ^7hich get curved and force part of the sepaline spur outwards
Aecordiogiy we find gibbous spars in D. hybrkum and I>. dmudaium and straight or regulaily curved
spurs m n. cyfhopkctmm and L. saniouWoLum. As the otiier cbaracleM on ^^hich Boissier bases
tho distmct.on between B. cyphopkcirum and D. kybridmn prove rariabk, the former has to bo
reduced to tho rank ci a subspecies of th« latter. To retarn to D. saniadoeMmn The pknt
ooUeeted by Aitchison in the Km-rum Valley, and which Boissier refers as variety ma-ropkchum to
B. penicmum, is mncb more closely allied to tho Gilgit forms of Ü. sauicuWoiiicm ; and as the name
mncropleel'um ceases to be appropriate, the wiiter prefers to call it var, km-rumensr. To the group of
D. ianictiloe/olium belong also some plants from Eastern Afghanistan, among them No 45 of lleib
Jiast Ind. Cotnp., B. tuberosum? They are oharaoteri^od by their long narrow-oylindi^icd sepalino'
and elongated awl-shaped nectarial spurs. The insufficiency of the material leaves it somewhat
doubtful whetlier this should be united with J). sanicul^Mum, or considered a separate s J i l
Lo a certain extent it reminds ono of some forms of B. dmudalum, but the seeds are tho/e of
D. i-jn\cul(xfolMm. It is hero described as subspecies wnleUroides.
The following varieties may be distinguished
