A small GLALJROAS tree, the branchlets usually pale brown. Leaves membranous, shortly
pct.olate, obliquely clliptic-lanceolate or oblanceolate, shortly and bluntly acuminate, irrey
u b r l y serrulate; main nerves about 13 or 13 pair., rather bold; secondary nerves transxerse,
slightly promiue-t below; length 7 to 9 in., breadth 2 to 3 in., petiole '2 in
liacemcB se.sile, about -5 in. long, several together, axillary or extra-axillary, about S-to
o-flowcred, with ovate bracteoles. Flowers pedicellate. Sepals puberulous, broadly ovate
much shorter tlian the petals. Petals 5, lanceolate, with long bluntly acuminate ex.^erted
apiecs. Stamens glabrous, shorter th.in the petals; the filaments twice as lon-^ as the
anthers, slender, rising from a deep, 5-lobod, disc; the anthers short, ovate, with^a sinn-le
v e r y small terminal appendage; ovary sessile, globose, glabrous, warted; style long,
l y l i n d r i c , glabrous or puberul.ius. Ripe cajjsnle globular, pointed, rather more thf.n -5 in
long, glabrous, Icnticellate; valves compressed, poiuted. Seeds 2 in each valve, .ub-rotund
whitish, carunculate. '

A L.rge shnib or tree 20 to 25 feet high. Esternnlly this muck resembles A. Mai,,jay!, but the
flo«crs, aud esjiecially the anthers, differ much.

A glabrous tree; the older branchlets pale, lenticellate. Leaves niembranoxig, shortly
petiolate, inequilateral, elliptic to elliptic-oblong, sub-acute, sub-entire, gradually nan-owed
below the middle to the acute slightly unequal base; shining above, dull beneath and
darker except the midrib and 13 to 15 pairs of prominent, sub-erect, pale main
n e r v e s ; secondary nerves transverse; length 8 to 14 in., breadth 3 to 4-5 in., petiole -20
to -30 in.; stipules subulate, -35 to -5 in. Panicls axillary, crowded, much branched
spreading, 1 to 2-5 in. long (longer in fi-uit), puberulous or glabrescent; the bracteoles
numerous, ovate, acute. Sepals unequal; the outer 2 or 3 larger, rotund; the inner 2 or
;5 ovate, pubescent on the back. Petals ovate, a little longer than sepals, rliomboid
w i t h pale edges, villous on the back externally and along the midrib internally. S/amJs
glabrous, the filaments rather short, from a fleshy disc; anther cordate, with a siiii'le
terminal minute white ovate membranous appendage from tlie connective.' Ooari/ sessile
globose, glabrous. Style cylindric, stigma cup-shaped. Capsule ovoid, pointed, glabrous^
not lenticellate: valves compressed, pointed; seeds sub-globular, carunculate.

A tree 30 to 40 feet high, approaching A. ScorUchini in extenials, but with difforeut flowers.

A small shrub, the young branches rufous-tomentose. Leases membranous, shortly
petiolate, lanceolate, acuminate, the edges serrulate, the base acute; upper surface
glabrous excopt the pubescent nerves aud midrib, lower rufous-pubescent; the nerves
about 12 pail?, bold, as are the transverse veins; length 4 to 6 in., breadth l-o to 1-75
in., petiole -2 in.; stipules lanceolate, pubescent externally. Flotvers in small, sub-sessile,
3- to 5-flowered axillary cymes. Sepals narrowly oblong, obtuse, tomentose externally.
Petals linear-oblong, the apex sub-acute and reflesed, hairy along the midrib externally.
Stamens alternating with the lobes of a deep, 5-lobed, glabrous disc; filaments slender
glabrous, longer tiian the anthers. Anthers small, ovate, each with un ovate acute small
terminal appendage. Ooanj sessile, globular, villous; style long, cylindric, sub-villousstigma
truncate, cup-shaped. Capsule -5 in. long, rusty-pubescent externally and densely
covered with unbranched, often hooked, soft, pubescent spines about -15 in. lon^» and
not felted. Seeds ovoid, smooth, pale, with dark semi-circumferential baud, and an
oblong carunoilus.

membranous, sub-sessile, oblong-oblanceolate, caudate-acuminate, serrulate the base
narrowed; upper surface glabrous; the lower pubescent, especially on the prominent
midrib and 14 to 16 pairs of lateral nerves; lengtii o'o lo 7-5 in., breadth 1-y to 2-5
ill., petiole 2 in,; stipules subulate, -3 in. long. Flowers in dense axillary bracteolate
glomeruli. S-pals ovate, obtuse, tomentose. Petals lanceolate, acuminate, pubescent
extermilly, and (like the sepals) with an apical tuft of hairs, glabrous internally. Stamens
f r om a short minutely toothed glabrous disc, tiie filaments longer tlian the anthers •
anthers narrowly ovate, each with a small rounded terminal appendage from the
connective. Ovari/ elongate, sparsely villous; style pubescent; stigma truncate,
cup-shaped. Capsule -5 in. long flocculent-tomentose, densely covered with unbianched'
subulate, soft, pubescent spines about -5 in. long, not felted. Seeds pale, ovoidi
smooth, Avith sub terminal papillate caruncle.
