base usually densely villous; secondary peduncles 3 - 8 , rarely all of them simple, usually
the central one and one or two others simple, the remainder unibel-beanng, rather
uneoual in leno-th. Pedicels pretty slender, slightly pubcrulous to densely silkynubicent.
Sepals 5, obovate, 9 - 2 0 mm. long, i to | as broad, white, gkbrous. Stamens

DESCKIPTIONS OP HEW AND ItARE INDIAN PLANTS. 83
F r om the form of A. pohjanOieii with compound umbels this is pretty easily distinguished by the
rarer indumentum, the less regular umbels and umbellule', the snboentral and straight persistent
style, and the distinctly ribbed seeds. A plant, in nearly every respect hbe A. elongate/, but with onesided
and recurved persistent stylo, was gathered by Maingiy in Northern China on the Shan-tung
range (3,500'). It is not referred to in Hemsley's Enumeralion. The specimens of Wallich's Anemone
eurta and Anemone g/raniifoU in the Calcutta Herbaiium are umbeUu'es of either Anemone elongata
or of the compound foim of Anemone pohjanthee. Anemone potyai ths is eompletely linked with A.
noromijlora by numerous inteimediate forms from Turkestan, Tibet, and Northern Sikkim; it must
therefore bo reduced to the rank of a subspecies of A. noreissijtora.

ADONIS BREVISTYLA, Franchei, var. TRICIIOCAKPA, P . B,
The plant figured on plate 109 belongs to the group of species of which A. eetrula, Moxm., A. Daridt,
Franebet, and A. Ireeidgla, Franebet, are members. The latter two nie known to the writer only froni
Franobct's lucid descriptions and the accompanying figures. Our plant differs from A. Dotiili by I h e

The chief differences appear to be in the more slender habit of our form, in the shortness of the
sheaths of the lower leaves, and the ojlonr of the petals. From Franchet's A. bnrUgla it differs by the
leaves not being densely crowded, by th. sheath, of the upper leaves being short, by the segments of the
first order being ovate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate in outline and not ovate-deltoid, by the number of
sopah, being 5 uistead of 6 - 7 , by th. ovaries being hairy and not glabrous, and by the stylo not being very
short u, eonparison with tb, ovmy during fiowering. The afEnity to A. o„-uka, Maam. appears to
be much less oloss. The following is a detailed description cf om- pUnt.
A perennial herb, glabrous except the ovaries, 30-50 em. high when in flower
fihizome descending, snbcylindi-ic, covered at the apez with oblong ohtese scales. Stem
erect, straight or flexnose, slender, obtuse-angled, simple or oftener branched upwardleafy
from near the base, 2 - 3 mm. thick near base; branches 0-3, spreading, very
slender, leafy, often overtopping the main axis. The leaves may bo considered as sessile or
neariy so, the lower pinnie being inserted near the base, hut very small and of the appear
anceof stipules; petioles dilated into a short sheath, h.H-stem-clasping; suprabasal pinna, in
outline ovale-eblong, below bipinnatisect, lower 1 0 - 1 6 x 4 - 7 cm., uppeimost 2 - 5 cm
long; rhachis canaliculate, lower ¡iseudo-petiolos 4 - 9 , upper 3 - 7 cm. long; leaf-segment^
opposite, subopposite, or alternate; lowest primary segments (plnnie) springing from the
vagma, ovate or subrotnnd in outline, 5 - 1 8 mm. long; the others ovate-lanceolate; secondary
ones sessile oyate-ohlong and lanceolate in outline; laeini» lanceolate, mucronate incised
or quite ent^e. Inflorescence ceiitrifugah Plowers terminal on main axis and branehegreenish,
with branched nerves, elliptic-ohlong er one or the ether ohovate-oblong;
