roots very long and stout; mternodes green, i - . l in. long. Lmms i—8 by i ~ 2 in., spreading
and -waved, deeply cliannelled, dark green. PeduncU 1 - 2 in., stout, groen, with broad
ovate obtuse sheaths \ in. long, tho lowest of which are annular; spike i—5 in., densefld.,
glabrous or faintly furfuraceous; bracts nearly as long as tho short ovary; flowers
A in. broad in Penang specimen, ^ in. in tho Bhotan dramug. Sepals and petah widely
spreading. Lip about as long as the sepals, yellowish, flushed witla red, dorsal callus
erect forked; spur almost bottle-shaped, the inflated truncate end 2-lobed and each lobo
again faintly lobulate, sometimes transversely septate near tho base within. Column
very short and stout, rostellum obscure. Anther flat, ovate, acuminate ; pollinia
globose ; strap very slender, dilated above; gland small.
A very stout species as figured here, remai-kable for the Ijottle-ahaped spur of the lip, which
resemWes that of Saccolabium buccomn, Reichb. f. I have some doubts as to whether there may
not be two speeiea included under C. spicatum, and that the Sikkim plant {of wbioh I have seeu no
specimen) figured here may be diSerent from the Tenasserim and Penang one, the flowers are so
much larger; allowance, however, must be made for the habitual exaggeration oE native artists.
On the other hand, the Sikkim habitat may not be a correct one, the transposition of labels of
garden plants is so frequent and not detectable. The drawing is inscribed «Sai'cauthus latiioUus,
T. Anders., from B. G., 26th April 1863, introd. by S. Jennings, Esq., from Bhotan. T. Anders."
Another drawing of a plant with narrower leaves is inscribed "From Perak, Kunstler misit, H.B.C.
fld. 23-5-84."
