flowered in the Calcutta Garden. There are specimens in Herb. Kew from all the given localitieB»

Psmdobull)8 ^—1 in., dark gi-een, purplisb at the top, smooth. Scape 2 in., slender,
inclined, red-brown; bracts ^ in., lanceolate, shorter than the ovary, which with the
pedicel is 5 in.; flowers ^—f in. long, papillose. Dorsal sepal apicnlaie, lateral "with
involute mai-gins, nerves of petals flexuous.
The hairs on the dorsal sepal and petals of the drawing are intended to represent the cellular or
papillose erose texture of these organs. The difierenfc colour of the flowei-s of the specicten figured and
the enlarged one is not easily accounted for, and the enormous column represented at, fig. 3 is quite
unlike that of any speoies of the genus known to me. On the other hand, the hahit of the plant
is entirelj that o£ C. cmpitomm, assiuning that the flowers have not spread in an umbellate form,
as they should do.
The drawing here reproduced is inscribed " Cirrhopetalum cCBspitosum, Mr. J. Gibson, 1836" in
Wallich's writing. The figure difiers from Lindley's description in the dorsal sepal being ciliate and
not scabrid, and in the petals not being poctinately serrate, also in the large size of the lip. In
the Flora of British India the lateral sepals are described aa obtuse.

Pseudohills very variable, f—1 in. diam., young often nearly globose, old deeply
lobcd at the sides. Leaves 2 on young pseudobulbs, 4—5 in. long,, rather flaccid. Scapc
4—6 in., !>tout or slender, often red-brown, sheaths few, appessed; spike usually inclined
or nodding, with 3—10 spreading or drooping flowers; bracts cymbiform, broadly
ovate; ovaiy about in. long. Dorsal sepal } in., yellow streaked with red;
lateral remote at their bases, margins glabrous or ciliate; petals purplish red; lip subcylindiic,
streaked and speckled with rcd-puiple, tip thickened incurved.
A very singular species, quite unlike any other, remarkable also for its wide distribution, being
one of the few epiphytic orchids that inhabit- both the Himnloyaa and Java. The specimen and figures
from native specimens, of which I have seen several, show a good deal of variation in the form and
colouring of the bracts and perianth spgments. The drawing here reproduced 'is of a Sikkim specimen
