This antiquity was of high date ; and not belonging to the later
empire of the Romans in Britain. It was the property of the very firft
pofiefTors of this old camp •, for it was not found either on or near
the furface. It was loft on the firft pofTeffion of the ground, having
been difcovered very deep, beneath a very thick pavement within the
precinits, which confifted of two great ftrata.
