T h is county was p art o f the ancient E rg a iia , or Jar-ghael, or
land o f the weftern Caledonians, which extended as fa r as Gairlocb
in the ihire o f Rofs. I t formed part o f the dominions o f the old
Scots, whofe kingdom reached from the F irth o f Clyde, along the
whole coaft, even as far as Bungjby head, in Caithnefs * .

the fide o f an arm o f the fea, called, from the plenty o f Ihells;
Loch-fuchan. G o b y a heap o f ftones, called Cairn-Alpin, becaufe
from hence the bodies o f the Alpiniades, or fucceflors o f that
monarch, were embarked fo r interment in the facred ground o f
Jona. A f te r quitting this loch, arrive in a barren tra ft o f b la ck
heathy land, enlivened now and then w ith fome pretty lakes.
R ea ch the banks o f Loch-Aw , where tha t fine water is contraóted
to the breadth o f about three quarters o f a mile. A m wafted
over in a ho r le -b o at; land on a fpot ftyled Port-fonnachan, and
after about ten miles riding, pafs between hills, finely planted with
feveral forts o f trees, fuch as Weymouth pines, & c . and reach the
town and caftle o f

T h is had long been the feat o f the Campbels. I t was inhabited
