and other eatables, that according to their opinion the deceafed- may
fuck them: for they fuppofe the fouls o f thofe who are gone to
heaven, return on the fourth day and live invifibly among their
friends and relations. Thefe fouls are looked upon as good, genii,
and in every undertaking they are addrelfed for afliftance and fuc-
eels, the priefts being fuppofed ro have an intercourfe with them,
Thefe and many other, traditional dodtrines are. communicated, hy
certain teachers to- the youth o f both fexes, in houfes appropriated
for that purpofe. T h e boys efpecially learn, the names and
directions o f the 12 winds o f their compafs, the names, and
motion, o f the brighteft liars; the lituation and names o f the
various neighbouring ifles, and by what courfe they mull lleer for
each of them. T h e teachers likewife communicate to them their
traditional dodtrines o f religion. It is obferved that though they
have no knowledge o f a maker o f Heaven and Earth, they however
acknowledge a good and great fpirit, who is. the great Load of
Heaven, to whom many fpirits both good and evil are Subordinate :
thefe fpirits are celeftial beings diflerent. from thofe who inhabit
the Earth, they have a body, and marry in the llyle o f their chiefs,
more than one wife. T h e oldeft fpirit known among them is called
Sabucoor, and his wife’s name is Halmelul. Their, fon was Eliulep,
( i. e. the great fpirit) and their daughter Ligobuud. Eliulep
married
married Leteuhieul, a woman born in the illand of Ulee, and had
by her a fon called Lugueiling, (i. e. middle of heaven) whom thefe
nations worlhip as the great lord o f heaven, o f which he is prefump-
tive heir : Leteuhieul died in the prime of her youth and her
fpirit flew to heaven.. Eliulep adopted a young man, bom in the
illand o f Lamurec, called Refchahuileng, who, being tired with
living on earth, afcended to heaven, in order to enjoy the delights
o f his father : his mother being Hill alive at Lamurec, he came to
her into the middle region o f the air and communicated to her the
mylteries . o f heaven. T h e filler o f Eliulep,. called Ligobuud, finding
herfelf with child in the middle region of the air, came down
to earth, and brought forth, three children. She was altonilhed to
find the earth to he , barren and d r y ; by her powerful word the
earth was covered with, herhs, flowers, and fruit-trees;. Ihe covered
the earth with verdure, and peopled it with reafonable men.
No death then took place on earth, for in lieu o f it a Ihort lleep
befel the men the laft day of.the moon, who revived at her re-apparition
on the horizon, as i f awaking from an agreeable Humber.
But Erigerigers, an evil fpirit, who'was difpleafed with the hap-
pinefs of mankind, brought about a kind of death,, againll which
there is no remedy, and fince that time, he who dies once is certainly
dead : this evil genius is. called Elus melabut, (i. e,. malevolent
