T his Plate,'.which 'represents' the dress of an inhabitant o f th e coast
o f Syria, is also very similar to that, worn b y the Asiatic Janissaries.
-It is:highly "picturesque, and very different from th e Janissaries of
^Constantinople. In many eastern counfries the" climate is very variable;
and the inhabitants therefore are obliged to clothe themselves
•warmer, thanT2uropeans perhaps might think it necessary, and to
p u t on several lin d sio f dress,’ o n e over the other, th a t they may
either lay them aside or resume them- a t their pleasure, as the tem-
pemture-iietfi^g atmosphere varies. The bhie ctofce; thrown'over the
left shoulder is fpr th a t purpose.
