separated from fbat e f Paros, so famous fo rits marble, by a very
narrow- straight. I t is the la te s t of all tb^Cyclades, and can vie
with most o f them in ferthi t y , although its shores present onlybpld,
barren, and almost inaccessible mountains, to all, who approach it.
But these mountains are only so many barriers, which nature has
formed, to oppose the violence of the w in d s a n d thus preserve the
riches of .its plains and valhes, so famous for their fruits and wines.
The inhabitants of Naxos have been remarked even from the earliest
times for- feMr loveof liberty. - 'Fbeunen were braveand generous,
the women modest sad beautiful : bat under the Turkish govern-1

is singular, yet, in naan/ respects, elegaht, particularly the head-
dress, which may vie even w ith the correct taste of the present British
fashions.
