T h i s beautiful moss was omitted in the second edition
of Muscologia Britannica, being then known only in a barren
state. It grows on limestone rocks in moist shady places,
and is abundant in the woods of Mucruss, and elsewhere
near Killarney and Kenmare in Ireland ; also near Beaumaris
and in other places inNorth Wales. Fertile specimens
were gathered at Mucruss by Mr. Wilson, on the 50th Oct.
1829, and he has since observed it in plenty and bearing
fruit in several places.
Leaves very concave, so as to appear inflated at the back,
with a stout and well-defined nerve, often forked or branched
about midway.
This species resembles H . blandum and H. rutabulum ;
but is abundantly distinct from both in its very rostrate lid.
The platter-edged leaves also furnish a ready mark of discrimination,
when in a barren state, between this and all
