brevibus tumidis, foliis rotundo-ovatis concavis obtusis apice dorso muricatis, utriculis (cellulis ramu-
loruui externis) spiraliter striatis.— Bryol. Univ. Sphagnum obtusifolium, Eook. et Tayl. ex parte,

2. Sphagnum compnctum (Brid. Sp, Muse. i. 1 8 , et Brjol. Univ. i. 1 6 ) ; caule robusto, ramis
dense approximatis patentibus crassis strictis, foliis rameis imbricatis ovato-oblongis concavis apice snbin-
flexis trnncatis denticnlatis.—iVre» et Hormeli. Bryol. Germ. t. Z .f. 5.
Var. 7 . ovalum; foliis brevioribus ovatis snbacutis.
H a b . In b o g s : Huon Eiver, Oldfield. 6 1 .
D is t k ib . Campbell’s Island, New Zealand. The ordinary form of the species frequent in Europe and
in North America.
The var. y much resembles S. cymHfclimm. bnt the leaves are not muiicate at the dorsal apex, and the nlrieles
of the branches are destitute of spiral strim. FoUoge of a pale fawn-colour.

H a b . Huon River, Oldfield.
D i s t r ib . Campbell’s Island.
“ Tery similar to S. cymbifolium and to S. Antareticum, but in structure allied only to the latter, from which it
recedes in the form of its branch-leaves. S. compactum is immediately distinguished from these species by its cortex
being composed of a single series of ceUs.”—Mitten, I. c.
4. Sphagnum contortum (Schultz, Suppl. Fl. Starg. 64) ; caule elongato rigidiuseulo, foliis ovatolauceolatis
imbricatis acutis concavis subcoriaceis. {Oldfield, 29.)
Var. 2. laxum; ramulis distantibus attenuatis patulis. {Gunn, 41.)
Var. 3. scorpioide«; ramis dense confertis singulis binisve brevibus patentibus sursum curvatis, foliis
elongatis apice prsraorsis, rameis erectis subsecundis. {Gunn, 2.)
Var. 4. intermedium; caule humili, ramulis dense confertis attenuatis, foliis laxer eticulatis. {Gunn, 3.)
H a b . In bogs. Vars. 1 and 3. Mount Welhngton, aud the others common.
D is t r ib . Europe.
Var. 4, from the lax texture of the foliage, resembles S. acutifolium, but the stem has a single layer of cortical
cellules as usual. Var. 3 has a singular aspect, and may perhaps be a distinct species, with purplish foliage.
5. Sphagnum molliculum (Mitten, in Linn. Soc. Journ. ined.); “ S .piumoso simile, caule corticc
ex strato unico cellularum formato, foliis subelliptico-ovalibus basi brevissime calcaratis apice rotundatis
subtmncatis minute denticulatis spatiis intercellularibus ut plurimum repletis margine e serie triplici cellularum
angustissimarura composito, ramulis flaccidis corticc cellulis inanibus foliis ovatis acuminatis marginibus
superne incurvis apice cucullato-coiicavis rotundatis argute denticulatis marginibus ut in caulinis
spatiis angustis elongatis spiris repletis poris nullis ?”
H a b . Cheshunt, Archer.
“ Habit intermediate between S. acutifolium and S. plumosum, but approaching more nearly to the latter.”—
Milten, I. c.
6. Sph . cymbifolioide s (C. Mueller, Bot. Zeit. 1851, p. 54 6 ); “ caulis procerus flaccidus,
ramis subremotis breviusculis cuspidatis curvatis patentibus vel recurvatis, comalibus erectis brevioribus
densiusculis obtuse cuspidatis; M a caulina e basi latissima plana ovalia, apice involutaceo obtuso brevi,
haud truncata, e cellulis breviusculis basi laxioribus longioribus, ductibus subheteromorphis prseditis,
ubique fere repletis reticulata, immarginata, e ceteris rameis similia; ramea ovaha apice haud involuta,
erecto-appressa uec falcata nec secunda, summo apice truncato dentibus circiter octo coronato, tenuiter
marginata, e celluhs teneris amplis flexuosis valde repletis constructa; cellula; ramorum ihanes.”—
Mitten, I. c.
H a b . Cheshunt, Archer.
“ The description above quoted, according to Mossman’s specimens, is incorrect, for the cauline leaves have a
margin of three rows of nan-ow cells. In this species the cortical cells are in a single stratum, and the leaves of
the ramuli have the intercellular spaces with a pore between every turn of the spiral fibre.”—Mitten, I. c.
7. Sphagnum confertum (Mitten, in Journ. Linn. Soc. ined.) ; “ habitu S. compacti, ramulis dense
confertis breviusculis, caule cortice e serie cellularum triplici formato serie externa fibris repleto, foliis
oblongis apice rotundatis suberosulis spatiis intercellularibus superioribus fibris repletis inferioribus inani-
bus margine nuUo, ramulis cortice cellulis inanibus foliis ovatis concavis obtusis apice truncatis denticulatis
margine serie unica cellularum augustissimarum superne minutissime serrulato spatiis latiusoulis fibris spiris
approximatis repletis poris singulis.”
H a b . Rivulet uear Cummiug’s Head, Western Mountains, Archer.
“ Appearance and habit similar to -S. aubsecundum, but the cortical ceUs disposed in a triple series.”__
