Tliis Tanager was first described by Sclater in his Synopsis o f the genus Euphonia,
published in the “ Contributions to Ornithology” for 1851, under a MS. name bestowed upon
it by Prince Bonaparte. The locality then assigned to it upon the faith o f M. Veixeaux’s label
Avas Ecuador, but its correct “ habitat” has since been ascertained to be Venezuela ; examples of
it foi-ming part o f the lai-ge series o f birds transmitted by M. Levi-aud to the Museum o f the
Jardin des Plantes from the vicinity o f Caracas.
The nearest ally o f this species is C. viridis, o f the wood-region o f South-Eastern Brazil ;
from which, however, it may be immediately distinguished by its y ellow forehead and green bade.
We regi-et to say that the female is unknoAvn to us, but we may conjecture that it nearly
resembles that o f the ally above-mentioned.
Our figure o f this Tanager is taken ffom the specimen in Sclater’s collection, wliich fonned
the type o f his origiual description. Besides those at Pai'is, otiiers are in the Berlin îluseum,
and in the fine collection o f Hen* Ferdinand Heine, o f Halberstadt.
