This little-known Thick-knee varies considerably from the normal colouring of its congeners,
and more nearly resembles one o f the allied genus Esaeus in general external appearance,
i t is, nevertheless, a typical OEdicnemüs in form, aud o f great interest as fomimg a second
American species o f this widely diffused group. •
The Peruvian Thick-knee was discovered by Tschudi, in the western coast-region o f le r o ,
north of Lima, near the Port o f Huacho, and fully described in his well-known Fauna Peruana.
Although Tschudi states positively that it is different from OEdicnemüs vocifer ( OE. histriatus,
Wagler) no other succeeding wi-iter has been content to recognize it; both Gray* and Schlegclf
considering it to be the same as Waglcr’s species. The points o f difference between the two
birds are, however, very obvious on comparison. OEdicnemüs superciharis is a smaller
species than OE. Ustriatus. Its ground-colom- above is grey instead o f dark brownish black,
and the markings are less defined and much more minute. It has, likewise, a well-defined
black stripe beneath the prolonged white superciliary mark, which is not found in the allied
species. There are, besides, many other differences, which we need not en la rp upon.
O u r f ig u r e o f this fine species is taken from a specimen, not quite adult, in Messrs. Salvin
and Godman’s collection, labelled as having been killed in the valley of die liimac, near Luna.
It is the only example o f this bfrd wc have yet met with.
