Mr. Gould describes his Nyctibius hmcteatus as from “ Bogota.” Tliis may be a correct
locality, but, amongst many thousands o f Bogota skins examined, wc have never met with it.
A more certain 2^aina is British Guiana, where Schomburgk obtained a single specimen. Heiicc
it extends over the Amazon v alley as far as Pebas, where Messrs. Casteluuu and Dcville
obtained an example now in tbe Paris Museum.
Nyctibius hracteatus is a very well-marked species, distinguished by its small size, i-ed
coloui-ing, and the quadrate white spots on the scapulars and plumage below. It cannot well
be confounded with any o f the five other known species o f the genus, which stand as follows,
taking the larger sized fir st:—
