There can be little doubt after au attentive perusal o f Vieillot’s description, that tbe Thrush
we now figure is the true Turdus albicollis o f that author, as described from specimens collected
by the younger Delalando in Brazil, but not the Turdus albicollis o f Spix. Cabanis and
Burmeister have both taken this view o f the case, and w e see no reason to alter their decision,
though the accurate arrangement o f the synonyms o f the closely aDied species o f Brazilian
Thrushes upon which we are now engaged is by no means an easy task. The White-necked
Thrush may be at once distinguished from all its allies by the deep cinnamomeous red o f the
flanks and sides o f the belly, o f which colour there are no traces in the other three species. The
whole o f the under-wing-coverts are likewise cinnamon red, not quite so dark as the flanks,
but the inner webs o f the remiges* below arc without this colouring. This renders it easily
distinguishable from the true T. alhiventris, in which the cinnamomeous colouring o f the under-
wing-coverts is continued over the under surface o f the quills.
As far as we Icnow this Thrush is confined to tlie southern pvoràices o f Brazil. Bnrraeister
tells us that it occurs in the brushwood o f the interior, and is much more arboreal in its habits
than T. leucomelas. His son procured one specimen near Lagoa Santa. From Herr von
Pelzeln’s recently published catalogne o f Natterer’s collection wc learn that that indefatigable
traveller obtained seven examples o f this Thrush in the Provinces o f Dio Janeiro and Sao
Paolo—the exact localities given being Dio Janeiro, Registro do Sai, and Ypanema.
Our figure o f this species is taken from a skin in Sclater’s collection which is believed to
have been obtained in the vicinity o f Eio. We have seen others in collections from the same
district, but not iu those from Bahia, where T. crotopezus seems to take its place.
