This -well-marked species o f Sparro-w-liawk, was described by Mr. Sclater at a meeting o f
tlie Zoological Society, in May, 18G6, from an example placed in bis bands for examination
by Mr. J. H. Gurney, and named ventralzs, from the rich rufous colouring o f the undcr-plumage,
by wliich it may readily he distinguished ffom every other American species o f the genus.
Our figme is taken from the typical specimen, which is destined to foim part o f the rich collection
o f Raptorial birds in the Norwich and Norfolk Museum. Two other specimens o f this species
are contained in the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle o f the Jai-din des Plantes in Paris, to which
they were ti-ansmitted by M. Lindig from New Granada. The specimen wc now figure is
also from that counfry, the skin being o f the tmmistakable form by which the work o f all the
native collectors in the vicinity o f Bogota may he recognized.
There is a single mounted specimen o f this SpaiTOw-liawk in the British Museum, also
received from Bogota. It is not quite adult, and is less rufous below, presenting faint traces of
transverse markings. The imder tail-coverts are nearly white, and the plmnbeous tinge on the
chest is not apparent. In this stage o f plumage it somewhat resembles A . erytlirocnemis, to
which species this specimen has been doubtfully refeiTed by Mr. Sclater, in his list of the birds
o f Bogota.*
