This Thrush has been united by different authors with T. alhivenfrù, T. crotopezus, and even
with the very distinct T. rufiventris, o f which d’Orbigny gravely tells us that it is the female.
'The confusion thus caused has led to its havmg received three additional names besides
the one originally bestowed upon it by Vieillot. TVe hope that the figure o f it herewith
giveu, under what we believe to be its oldest designation, will render it easily reeognlzable
by future Ornithologists.
Azava’s description o f his Zorzal obscuro g Uanco is, we must admit, as Dr. Cabanis has
already complained, a little obscure, but the fact o f this being the only member o f the section
found in Paraguay and the Argentine Eepublic leads us to believe that it is in all probability
Azara’s species. It is certjiinly Turdus amaurochalinus o f Cahanis, as a specimen o f it thus
marked in that author’s own Jtandwritbg is in Sclater’s collection. Spix appears to Imvc
figured tins bird as the female o f his T. alhiventris, and Sclater employed the same tenn for it
in his “ Synopsis o f American Thrushes,” not being then acquainted with the bird legitimately
entitled to bear titat name, o f which wc shall give a drawing in onr next p.art. In both his
