The portion of the great Centrai American Istlunus ooenpied by tire Hcpubiic o f Costa
llie a and the adjacent Province o f Veragua is the seat o f a peculiar fauna, which ooutaius many
very remarkable forms. The most striking o f these are the w o n d e r f u l Bell-b.rtl with three
caruuoles (ClrmnorhynAus trímrunculaius), aud the bare-throated Umbrella-bnd {Cephaloptcruv
nlalrkollii). A number o f very beautifrd aud peculiar Hmnmiug-birds are also fomid m tins
district o f which Panterpe insignü, Miclirochera alUcoronala, and several species o f Ormpyra
stand me-cmiucnt. Other gi'oups are well represented b y distinct speeies, and even m some
cases b y peculiar genera. Amongst tbe foimer, the bird we now figure is one of tho most
beautiful as well as iutercstiug for the marked features o f its spécifié characters. ^
The first specimens o f this bird were obtained for Messrs. Salyin and Godman by Eimqae
Arcé, near Tucurtiqid, a village o f Costa Eioa, situated in a small plain sm-rotmded by hiUs on
the eastern slope o f tho Cordillera, and at an elevation o f about 3000 feet above the sea level.
These were described by Mr. Salvhi hr the “ Proceedings o f the Zoologieal Society’ for 1804.
Otlicr examples were subsequently obtained for the Smithsonian Institution by .1. Caimiol, at the
villao-es of Angostura and Payariqrii in Costa Eiea, as recorded by Mr. Cassm. During his
subsequent expeditions in Veragua Arcé appears to have fi-equently met wfih tins bird, as
speoimens were included in eaeli o f his oolloctions sent from the vdlages o f Santa Fe aud Santiago,
as well as from tho Cordillera o f T o ll. Southward o f Santa Fê no speoimen has been h it t e t o
encountered, the species being as yet unknown on the Isthmus at Pimama, nor have any o f the
oollectois wlio have visited districts immedUately to the south met with it. To the northward ot
Costa Eica it is equally imknorvii, so we may fairly presiune that tliis fine bird is restricted in
its rano-e to tlic above-mentioned localities.
