As we Rave lately shewn in our paper on the genus Astwrina published in the first part o f
the Zoological Society’s “ Proceedings” for the present year, tlicre has hitherto prevailed much
confusion amongst the difi'crent species o f Hawks which constitute this genus. We hope
that the figures given in this and the n e st following plates w ill serve to assist Naturalists to
accomplish the difficult task we have commenced o f endeavouring to restore order to the group.
The Falco magnirostris o f Gmelin rests upon the bird figured in Buffon’s Planche
Enluminée, no. 116, under the name ‘ Epervier à gros hec de Cayenne.' The name magnirostris
must therefore be retained for the Guianan representative o f this section o f the genus, from
wliich the present species may be easily distmguished by the rich rufous colouring o f the undersurface,
particularly o f the flanks and thighs. Asturina magnirostris is o f nearly a pure
cinereous below, slight indications o f rufescent tinge being only seen upon the darker bands of
the belly and the thighs. In A . nattereri the throat is darlcer cinereous, and distinctly striped
with white longitudinally ; the breast is rich rufous in very adult birds, almost without cross
markings ; the belly is very pale fulvous, or almost cream-colour, with numerous cross-bands
o f deep ferruginous ; the thighs are covered by minute cross-bands o f the same colour. In
A . magnirostris the thighs are pure white, cross-banded with pale cinereous, with merely a slight
rufcsccnt tinge. The upper plumage in A . magnirosb'is is also clear cinereous, instead of brown.
