A bout 94 species of birds were obtained here, b u t although th e locality h ad not, as fa r as avc
know, been previously visited b y collectors, v e ry few o f them p roved to h e new to science.
Amongst them, however, were examples o f th e pre sent species o f Wren, avIucIi Avas shortly
afterwards characterized b y Mr. Sclater, from Mr. P'raser’s specimens: from these also our figure
h a s been taken. Mr. F ra s e r states tlia t tb e two examples obtained Avere met Avith “ flying from
b ush to bush, smging, alo n g Avitli four o r five others.”
T h e pre sent species is distinguishable from C. modulator b y its blaclcish liead and larg e r
bill, an d fi-om G. laicrencii o í P an am a b y its brown b elly , Avhich is like th a t o f C. modulator.
T h e genus CyplioTliinus o f Cabanis, as re stric ted b y Prof. Baird,* forms a small b u t avcII-
mark ed section o f th e family Troglodytidee, Avbich is so large ly represeuted in South America.
The characters Avliich re ad ily distinguish it fi-om other sections o f th c fam ily are the high straig h t
culmen, an d more especially th e circ u lar n o stril Avhich is entire ly suvroimded b y membrane.
