tlian those o f our common DahcliicI- {Sylheocyclus minoi), and can hardly, we should think, be
available for flight. The second and third primaries slightly exceed the first in length, and are
the longest in the wing.
The tarsus o f this Grebe is considerably sliorter than the middle toe without the nail. As
in all species o f the genus, it is excessively compressed, and terminates posteriorly in a double
series o f scales, which, however, are much more prominent than in any other Grebe wc arc
acquainted with, so as to constitute two rows o f projecting spines, which run up the back of the
tarsus and are particularly well developed at the proximal extreinitja This striking peculiarity
has induced us to bestow upon the bird the generic name CentropelmaA A somewhat similar
formation occurs in the common Dabchiek, but does not attain the same degree o f development.
Our figure of the Grebe is taken from the same specimen as that described by il r . Gould,
which is now in Salvin and Godman’s collection. The only other individual we have met with,
which is in the Gallery o f the British IMuseum, was also obtained by Mr. Forbes on Lake Titicaca.
The species is, in all probability, exclusively confined to this enoimous Alpine lalce, which is
situated among the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes at an elevation o f upwards o f 12,800 feet
above the lev e l o f the sea.

American species o f this group with which we are acquainted are, besides the present, only
