Azara first made us acquainted with this strongly-marked Xiphocolaptes, having described
it in his well-known “ Apimtamientos para la historia natural de los paxaros del Paraguay”
under the Spanish name “ Trepador gi-ande,”— afterwards latinized by VieUlot into Dendrocopus
major. Azara states that this species is found on the high open trees at the edges o f tlie
forests o f Paraguay, singly or in pairs, and that there is no observable difference between the
sexes.
The only other Naturalist that appears to have met with this bird in its native wilds, is tlie
French traveller, Alcide d’Orbigny, who obtained specimens o f it iu the province o f Chiquitos
in Bolivia.
In 1833, Lafresnaye described this bird in the “ Magasin de Zoologie,” as Dendrocolaptes
ruUginosus, and gave an indifferent figm-e o f i t ; but subsequently allowed it to be without
doubt the same as Azara’s species.*
The Rusty ^Vood-hewer is readily distinguishable fi-om eve iy other species o f the genus
by its nearly uniform rusty-red plumage, and pale white bill. There are linear elongated
shaft-sti-ipes on tlie head and on portions o f the under plumage.
Our figure is taken fi-om a specimen in Sclater’s collection, believed to be from Bolivia.
